The Pixel Fold is the tech-giant’s first foldable phone
You would have had to have been living under a rock to not have seen the epic marketing campaign around Samsung’s Fold and Flip phones and their foldable screens. They are different, eye-catching, feature packed and they hark back to a time when the original Motorola Razr flip phone was the top of everyone’s Christmas list.
Since then, other manufacturers have joined the foldable trend with the latest kid on the block being the Google Pixel Fold, another flagship device to join the Google Pixel 7 series.
For those of you that are new to the concept of the foldable smartphone, it basically positions itself between a phone and a tablet as it is portable enough to go in your pocket but opens up into an immersive larger screen for gaming, work and movies.
Being a flagship model in the range, Google have packed their Pixel Fold with some of the latest tech including a top of the range processor and elite camera setup. As a result, the pricing is somewhere up there with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4.
It has a very impressive 7.6 inch display when opened out and a triple camera set up. It also features a second 5.8 inch FHD+ OLED outer display with both displays boasting a silky smooth refresh rate of 120 Hz. If you haven’t used a phone with a 120Hz screen before you’ll certainly be impressed with the difference. Animations and scrolling are so smooth that it can feel as though you’re scanning the pages of a book or magazine rather than looking at a smartphone screen.
Processor-wise, the Google Pixel Fold will be running the same Tensor G2 chipset as the Pixel 7 Pro and will be available with 256GB or 512GB of storage options. RAM will be fixed at 12GB which is plenty for a top tier device.
Camera wise, snappers can look forward to a triple rear camera setup with a 48 MP main sensor. Alongside this is a 10.8 MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and a 10.8 MP ultrawide camera with 121 degree FOV (field of view).
There are two selfie cameras thanks to the unique design of the smartphone with a 9.5 MP camera on the cover display and an 8 MP image sensor on the main display. The Pixel Fold beats the Galaxy Z Fold 4 on battery size at a mahusive 4,821 mAh which Google claim will allow users 24 hours of video playback time and up to 72 hours of standby time. There is also support for 30W fast wired charging as well as Qi-standard wireless charging.
The foldable tech on the Pixel Fold also offers an extra layer of protection to the folded screen as it is only exposed when you’re actually using it. Added to the phone’s durability is a Corning Gorilla Victus outer screen and IPX8 rating for water resistance. Another plus of a foldable phone is the fact that you can multitask in split screen mode and stand it up for video calls or to take photos like a tripod.
This may be Google’s first foldable phone but there’s no doubt more to come.
