Samsung Galaxy Flip 4 | Everything you need to know 18/08/22

Foldable smartphones have come a long way in the last few years, and the Galaxy Z Flip line from Samsung is likely the best one out there. The Z Flip 3 sold millions of units around the world last year. At the time, it was the best foldable phone on the market, but had a few areas where it needed to improve.

With the Flip 4, all of that has changed. Even though this is mostly an iterative upgrade, it focuses on improving the battery efficiency and camera performance of last year’s phone, as well as making a lot of smaller improvements to the quality of life.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 features upgraded hardware and some minor design updates that make the phone even more customisable and personal. Thankfully, the winning formula that underpins the Z Flip line-up has not been altered in any way. The modern-day clam-shell phone is still incredibly compact and conceals a large display on the inside. However, the cover screen on the outside now provides even more helpful information that can be seen at a glance.

Here is all the information you need about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

When Will You Be Able To Buy The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4?

Samsung showed off the new phone at its Galaxy Unpacked event on August 10, and you can now pre-order it before it goes on sale on August 26.

Similar to last year’s launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 3, it showed off the Flip 4, the Z Fold 4, the Galaxy Watch 5, and the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro headphones.

What Is The Price Of The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4?

There are three versions of the Z Flip 4 with different amounts of storage, plus the Bespoke Edition:

  • 128GB: £999
  • 256GB: £1,059
  • 256GB: £1,099 for the Bespoke Edition
  • 512GB: £1,199

The starting price of the Flip 4 has gone up by £50 in the UK, which shouldn’t be a surprise given how high inflation is right now. Lucky UK buyers can still get it for the same price as before. Adding 512GB of storage space is a nice addition for those that want more storage.

This year, Samsung is also selling the phone in “Bespoke Editions,” which let you change the colours of the front and back panels as well as the frame. This is only available for the phone with 256GB of storage and costs an extra £40.

The Build And Design

The Z Flip 4 doesn’t have a very different look from the Flip 3. Instead, it’s more of an improvement on the specifications. They have introduced a few more options when it’s to the bespoke option so, if you like to make your phone more to your taste the Z Flip 4 is certainly a great way to do just that.

The phone looks almost the same as the one from last year at first glance, but there are some small differences. The cover screen is slightly bigger, and the camera lenses stick out a little more from the body.

Some people don’t like this, however, if you can look passed the slightly raised camera, the improved specifications are worth it.

The edges of the phone are a little bit more squared off in comparison to the Z Flip 3, which makes it feel thinner and slimline. Samsung has also made the bezel on the internal display a little bit thinner, but not by much.

The hinge has been redesigned a lot to make it smaller, which is the biggest change in the way it is put together. This makes it less noticeable when the phone is open and also makes the ‘crease’ in the screen less noticeable.

The improved ultra-thin glass used to cover the panel should also help make it last longer. The outer shell is now made of Gorilla Glass Victus+, but the IPX8 rating stays the same. This means that the phone is resistant to water, but not to dust. You still need to be careful with dust on the hinge on the Z Flip 4 and ensure you keep the phone clean and clear of dust particles.

What Colours Can You Get The Galaxy Z Flip 4 In?

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes in some stylish pastel colours:

  • Bora Purple
  • Graphite
  • Pink Gold
  • Blue colours

Also, people who want to buy the Galaxy Z Flip 4 can customise it before they buy it thanks to Samsung’s unique Bespoke Studio, which lets them choose from over 70 different options. It lets you choose any combination of the following colours for the frame of the phone and each of the back panels. This makes the Z Flip 4 one of the most customisable phones on the market. The colour options include:

Frame:

  • Silver
  • Black
  • Gold

Bottom Panels:

  • Yellow
  • White
  • Navy
  • Khaki
  • Red

Displays

Samsung hasn’t made too many changes to the screens either. The folding screen on the inside is still a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen on the outside has grown from 1.83 inches to 1.9 inches.

Samsung has updated the software for that outer cover screen so that it can now show custom images, gifs, and even videos. It also has new widgets, such as a speed dial feature for up to three contacts, controls for the SmartThings smart home system, and switches for Bluetooth and airplane mode.

Cover Screen On The Galaxy Z Flip 4

As was already said, the crease on the screen seems to be less noticeable now that the hinge has been changed. The new crease is much shallower, making it harder to see and feel when you swipe.

Chipset, Random Access Memory, and Storage

The Z Flip 3’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor has been upgraded to the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which improves both performance and power efficiency.

The 8GB of RAM stays the same, but the storage is better. As mentioned above, the 128GB and 256GB storage options are back, and a new 512GB storage option has been added. This is a welcome change since, like the Z Flip 3, there is no MicroSD card slot.

Cameras

Again, there is a 10MP front-facing camera and two 12Mp cameras on the back (main and ultrawide). The selfie and ultrawide cameras are pretty much the same as the Flip 3, however, the 8+ Gen 1’s better image processing results in higher picture quality.

The main camera on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 12MP sensor, but the pixel size has changed from 1.4m to 1.8m. This should, in theory, cut down on noise in photos and make the main lens work better in low light.

The main camera has the most to gain from this. This one has a new, bigger sensor with 1.8m pixels instead of 1.4m pixels from last year. The new sensor is 65% brighter. Detail and dynamic range are better as a result, especially in low light, but many have seen improvements even in brightly lit shots.

Battery And Charging

The battery inside of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a capacity of 3,700 mAh and is split into two independent cells. When compared to the Z Flip 3, this is an increase of 300 mAh, despite the fact that the overall size of the two phones hasn’t altered all that much.

How was Samsung able to accomplish this without altering the device’s overall dimensions? The hinge mechanism that is now smaller in size.

According to Samsung, this increase in storage capacity is sufficient to deliver an additional three hours of movie playback time.

The situation with the charge has been improved. The Z Flip 4 has a much faster wired charging capability of 25W compared to the Z Flip 3, which only supported 15W charging. Wireless charging is limited to 10 watts, and you also have the ability to support reverse wireless charging, which is useful for topping up devices like Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro or Galaxy Watch 5/5 Pro.

Quick Facts:

  • Battery: 3,700mAh
  • Wired Charging Speed: 25 watts
  • Wireless Charging: Fast Wireless Charging 2.0
  • Reverse Wireless Charging: Yes
